What is an LSC?
Chicago Public Schools have Local School Councils (LSC) which are responsible for three main duties:
By law, Local School Councils (LSCs) play a vital role in decision-making at the local school level, thereby ensuring a quality education for all of the school’s students. The primary responsibilities of LSCs include approving how school funds and resources are allocated, approving and monitoring the implementation of the annual school improvement plan, and hiring and evaluating the school's contract principal.

Who should run?
All parents, community members and school staff members who want to strengthen their local schools and have a positive impact on student achievement are encouraged to run.
No experience or formal education is required.

How are members selected?
Every LSC candidate must fill out a set of forms available at schools and the Office of Local School Council Relations (2651 West Washington Blvd., 3rd Floor).

How are members selected?
- LSC members are elected and appointed to a two-year term beginning July 1 of even-numbered years
- LSC conducts elections in which parents and community residents vote for the parent and community member candidates and polls in which school staff vote for the school staff member candidates, who are appointed by the Board.
- The school principal is automatically a member of the LSC
