Science Fair
Science Fair projects are composed of a display board, an investigation, a written research report, and an oral presentation. Each student will be given instructions and handouts during class for the various steps of the project. Instruction in class, along with parental encouragement and supervision will help your child develop good time management skills and will ultimately result in a quality project. The final project is a large percent of the second quarter science grade.
The Bemmys

Burroughs has "The Bemmys" (Burroughs + Emmys) as our annual showcase for writing for grades K-8. The Bemmys Awards Night is held in early June and led by Middle School Writing Teacher Ms. Alma Rodriguez. All students in every classroom are invited to submit a story of prose. Writings are then judged and winners are picked from each classroom to attend Bemmys Awards Night, which includes a staff talent show based on a decades theme. Grade winners are selected. Pictured is Alyssa, who won her grade, along with her family on the Bemmys stage.

Chicago Children's Choir
Through the In-School Choir program, over 3,800 children in 80 Chicago schools receive classroom training in basic music theory and choral performance from professional music educators.
Students in the In-School Program have the opportunity to fully explore the expressive qualities of music while developing a sense of self-discipline, pride and intercultural understanding. Our model is in line with the National Standards for Music Education and the Chicago Guide for Teaching and Learning in the Arts, which is distributed by the Chicago Public Schools Department of Arts Education.
Burroughs commits to weekly rehearsals on Wednesday afternoons. Choir singers in grades 3rd-5th have performance opportunities both in our school and across the city during field trips organized by Chicago Children’s Choir.

Students Attend Demolition

Second grade students led by their teacher Ms. Dousias recently completed a Community Unit with a letter writing campaign to Alderman Cardenas and State Senator Martin Sandoval to complain about an abandoned, burnt-out building at the southeast corner of 36th & Rockwell. The Senator invited the students to attend a demolition hearing at the Daley Center on April 24, 2013. The judge heard arguments and decided to have the building demolished. Students celebrated their accomplishment with a tour of a jury courtroom, and lunch in the food court of The State of Illinois Building.
